In the opening scene of the drama, Vrinda spoke with Subala. She brought good news, but he did not yet understand it. He therefore asked her to explain clearly what was happening. Vrinda told him that Radha would go out with the sakhis that day. With their elders' permission, they would carry fresh ghee to sell. Their destination was the sacrificial pavilion beside Govinda-kunda. Nandimukhi had already informed Krishna of their coming. She had done so at the instruction of Sandipani's mother.

Subala wondered why the elders had sent Radha on such an errand. Vrinda explained the rule of the sacrificial ceremony. The women of the cowherd community were to bring the ghee personally. It was intended as an offering in the sacred fire. The sages had said that its bearers would have their wishes fulfilled. Asked who was arranging the ceremony, she named Vasudeva. While Kamsa lived, his sacrifice could not be accomplished in Mathura. He had therefore appointed Bhaguri, Garga's son-in-law, as his representative.

Vrinda explained that the rite sought peace and the removal of misfortunes. It was intended for the welfare of Krishna and Rama. Subala then thought of a wish Krishna had cherished for a long time. His friend wanted to play the toll collector before Radha and the sakhis. Now an opportunity for that pastime was appearing. Vrinda also wished to witness the meeting. Together they went down to the bank of Manasa Ganga. There Subala heard sounds he took to be the calls of swans.

Vrinda explained that the gopis' anklets were ringing. In the distance they saw Radha surrounded by smiling sakhis. She carried a golden vessel of fresh ghee on her head. A fine cloth had been folded into a support beneath it. Vrinda and Subala praised her beauty. Then Vrinda gave Subala a task. He was to bring Krishna behind the dark pavilion on Govardhan. She would watch the sakhis' pastimes and gradually join them.
