The Flute That Carries Radha’s Name

The sakhi tells Radha of Krishna’s gentle flute call and his attentive waiting beside the Yamuna.

Added:

Illustration: Krishna in yellow gently plays the flute in a woodland bower beside the Yamuna; Radha is not physically present.
Artistic illustration of the story

The sakhi described Krishna’s waiting to Radha. He stayed in woodland beside the Yamuna. A gentle breeze surrounded the place.

Krishna played his flute softly. Radha’s name was woven into the melody. Its sound was a signal calling her toward him.

Even a particle carried on the breeze was precious to him, if it had previously touched her body. In the verse, the slightest contact with Radha receives special value.

When a bird’s wings fluttered or leaves rustled, Krishna wondered whether she was approaching. He prepared a resting place and watched the path with anxious eyes.
