Уметничка илустрација приче

Noon was approaching, but the toll dispute had not ended. Nandimukhi asked Lalita what payment they would accept. Lalita removed a precious ring from Chitra's finger. She placed it before Krishna as an offering. Krishna pretended to be displeased. He told Subala to throw the ring toward the hilltop.

Subala made a movement as though he were throwing it. In fact, he concealed the ring in his hand. Believing it had been thrown away, Lalita angrily addressed Vrinda. Then she privately considered how to console Radha and Krishna. She proposed to Radha that they offer her necklace. With a playful gesture she took it from her neck.

Lalita compared the string of pearls to a messenger. The necklace, she said, was setting out to adorn Krishna. Then she explained to Him that she was leaving it as a pledge. It was to be redeemed with gold that evening. Krishna joyfully accepted it. He recognized the precious stone in its central ornament.

It was the jewel that had once adorned Shankhachuda's head. Balarama had previously given it to Radha. Krishna placed the necklace around His neck. Radha pointed out to Lalita the pearl necklace's good fortune. But the toll discussion continued even after this offering. Nandimukhi again tried to mediate.

Then Paurnamasi arrived. With some embarrassment, Krishna claimed to be seeking only toll money. Radha was glad that the elder protectress had come. Lalita explained that they had given the necklace but still could not leave. Paurnamasi answered them with affectionate wit. In their exchanges the sakhis kept directing the play toward Radha.

Radha playfully complained and pretended to weep. Paurnamasi embraced and comforted her. She assured her that everything would turn out favorably for her. Krishna said that Paurnamasi's arrival was His great good fortune. He considered her presence as good as having received the toll. Their conversation continued with double meanings about the precious gift.

At last Paurnamasi offered to stand as guarantor. She said she would provide the desired payment that evening. She asked Him now to let the sakhis proceed. They needed to carry their offerings to the sacrificial enclosure. Krishna accepted her assurance. The dispute no longer held up their journey.

Before leaving, Paurnamasi offered a prayer to Krishna. She wished Him always to share this pastime with Radha, the sakhis, and His friends. She also prayed for those longing to serve Them beside Radha-kunda. Krishna joyfully answered that it should be so. Then everyone departed for their intended tasks. With that, the action of the drama ends.
