Radha and the sakhi beside the moonlit Yamuna, with a symbolic image of Krishna as Her memory

The moon rose above Vrindavan. Its light spread through the trees. A long silver path appeared upon the Yamuna. Flowering branches became clear in the night. Everything seemed ready for a meeting. But Radha remained alone with Her waiting. Krishna had still not arrived. Moonlight did not lessen Her sorrow. It only made the empty path more visible. She looked toward the forest again.

The appointed time was already passing. Each new moment prolonged the question. Why could His footsteps not be heard? Had He forgotten their arranged meeting? Had something detained Him on the path? Radha had no answer before Her. Only the flowers' fragrance remained the same. The vines moved as before. But Her gaze now searched for an explanation. The night seemed longer than ever.

Radha remembered the sakhis' words. They had spoken of a joyful meeting with Krishna. With their help She had come to the forest. Now hope seemed fragile to Her. In the song She asks whom She can approach. Where can She find comfort in disappointment? Her questions were not a calm debate. They were the voice of a wounded heart. Jayadeva gives them room in his verses. Their strength can be heard throughout the night.

Radha remembered the path She had traveled. Dark trees had accompanied Her toward the meeting. She had not abandoned the wish to see Him. She had approached with trust and expectation. Now each memory touched Her differently. Even Her ornaments seemed prepared in vain. For whom had She arranged that beautiful appearance? She had wished Krishna to see Her joy. Yet only the nighttime landscape stood before Her. The place's beauty could not replace His closeness.

Other images arose within Her thoughts. Perhaps Krishna was with someone else. Perhaps He shared His smiles with her. Perhaps that was why He did not come here. Radha imagined another person's joy. Each imagined detail increased Her longing. She did not see it with Her own eyes. These were images born within the waiting. The poem makes them strong and vivid. As though doubt became present in the bower.

We may pause at that distinction. Krishna had indeed not come before Radha. But She did not know everything about His absence. Her thoughts tried to fill the emptiness. Memory reminded Her of His tenderness. Doubt offered Her a different story. The two alternated within Her song. She reproached Him and loved Him at once. No easy sentence explained the feeling. Its depth remained within the singing itself.

The breeze passed beside the water. It carried coolness and the garden's fragrance. But for Radha that coolness brought no peace. She felt the strength of separation. The moon illuminated the world around Her. But Her gaze searched only for Krishna. A bird stirred upon a branch. The water continued its quiet flow. Nature accompanied the song. But it could not answer in His place.

At last Her sakhi appeared. Radha immediately looked behind her. But Krishna had not come with the friend. That absence brought fresh disappointment. Still the sakhi could hear Her words. Radha revealed what troubled Her. Her hope and Her doubt. The love that remained even when painful. The friend again became a witness to the feeling. The night was no longer entirely without a listener.

The song continued through different moods. Tenderness alternated with reproach. Hope returned amid the restlessness. Radha could not simply forget Krishna. His very importance made the waiting so intense. Their past meetings lived within Her. But the present remained unfinished. Jayadeva does not end this night with an easy answer. He lets longing guide the story. Toward morning and the next conversation between Them.

This is a literary retelling of the seventh chapter. It develops Radha's nighttime song. Some descriptions and connections are imagined elaborations. The text is not a literal translation of the poem. Radha's imaginings are not presented as confirmed events. The source link leads to the relevant chapter. Krishna remains at the center of Her thoughts. The sakhi listens to Her voice. And the moon illuminates the lasting hope. As night slowly approaches the morning.
