Radha and the sakhis follow a flowering nighttime path toward a meeting with Krishna in Vrindavan
Kunstige illustrasie van die verhaal

Night wrapped Vraja in quiet. Radha wished to see Krishna again. Vrinda's message remained within Her heart. The meeting would be at Govinda-sthali. The sakhis were ready to accompany Her. They carefully arranged Radha's clothing. Each ornament was chosen with the journey in mind. Her longing mingled with joyful expectation. The friends encouraged Her with gentle glances. Soon they could set out toward the forest.

The poem describes two different nighttime appearances. On bright nights Radha wears white. Pearls and jasmine follow the moonlight. On dark nights She wears blue. Then Her ornaments follow the night's depth. In this picture we imagine Her in a blue sari. The sakhis attend to every small detail. They quiet the sounds of Her anklets too. Her steps become light and silent. The journey begins with their thoughtful help.

Radha went through the trees' shadows. The friends walked close beside Her. The breeze moved the leaves above the path. Familiar branches sometimes looked different at night. Radha searched for Her direction. She remembered the Vamshivata tree. Its branches were a sign toward the Yamuna. With that thought She continued forward. In the poetic image Vraja shortens the distance. The heart hastens toward the meeting place.

Govinda-sthali opened before them. The Yamuna surrounded it with Her closeness. The poet compares it to a great lotus. Its gardens are like countless petals. At the center stands a beautiful shelter. Adorned paths lead toward the bank. Flowering vines embrace the trees. Branches form a natural canopy. Radha and the sakhis looked upon the beauty. Everything reminded them of Krishna.

Vrinda had already decorated the place. Her helpers had prepared the necessary articles. She watched attentively along the path. Then she saw Radha arriving. She rose and approached Her joyfully. She adorned Her with hallaka flowers. They had previously been worn by Krishna. Then she showed Her the gardens and shelters. Radha delighted in every detail. But most of all She wished to see Him.

Waiting made every minute longer. Radha entered the flowering bower and came outside. She turned toward the path at each sound. Sometimes only a leaf fell from a tree. For a moment She thought Krishna was arriving. Then She asked Vrinda about Him again. The friends understood Her impatience. They remained close with quiet care. The garden was ready for their meeting. Now the hearts awaited each other too.

Meanwhile Krishna also set out toward the forest. He chose the path shaded by trees. His steps held the wish to meet Her. He wondered whether Radha had already arrived. Moonlight touched the other path. But He continued beneath the familiar branches. His heart shortened the distance too. Vrinda soon noticed Him approaching. She greeted Him with karnikara flowers. The two paths finally ended in the same garden.

Meanwhile Radha thought of a little joke. The sakhis helped Her hide. Golden figures holding lamps stood in the shelter. Radha stood among their gleaming forms. Sometimes She looked out for Krishna's arrival. Then She withdrew again with a smile. When He arrived, He did not see Her at once. He asked the friends where their sakhi was. They answered Him with playful quips. Soon the whole garden filled with laughter.

Krishna recognized Radha's fragrance. The sakhis tried to prolong the joke. But His wish to see Her grew. Vrinda gave Him a sign with her glance. He entered the illuminated shelter. Golden gleams made the search more playful still. At last Radha stood before Him. Both felt the joy of arrival. Krishna brought His hand close to Hers. The long expectation became a meeting.
