Gokula was celebrating Krishna's first birthday. Nanda invited the neighboring families and brahmanas. The courtyard filled with music and voices. Yashoda bathed and dressed her child for the day. Neighbors came with blessings and good wishes. Vedic prayers were heard alongside the songs. Cows and gifts also had a place in the celebration. For everyone it was a day of shared joy. Krishna watched the people from His mother's arms. His childhood made the courtyard come alive.

When He seemed sleepy, Yashoda laid Him down gently. Guests all around her asked for greetings and attention. The child grew hungry and began to cry. His voice was lost in the noise of the gathering. His small feet moved beneath a nearby cart. With one kick the wheel and the vessels fell. Everyone ran toward the loud sound. The children said they had seen Krishna kick. The adults found their account hard to believe. Yashoda first took her child into her arms.

Then the neighbors gathered the scattered vessels. The men repaired the cart in the courtyard. The brahmanas sang blessings for Krishna again. Nanda listened with gratitude and care. Yashoda rejoiced when her child settled down. The festival continued, though the strange event remained. Some spoke of the strength of those little feet. Others were simply glad no one had been hurt. Krishna was surrounded by people who loved Him. The days ahead brought another surprise.

One day Yashoda held Krishna on her lap. Suddenly He seemed unusually heavy to her. She set Him down carefully on the ground. For a moment she turned to household work. The sky had not yet become threatening. People in the village went about their tasks. Just then Trnavarta arrived. Kamsa had sent him in the form of a fierce whirlwind. Dust began to rise from the paths. In an instant the quiet day was transformed.

The wind closed every view behind a dark cloud. Leaves, dust, and light objects circled overhead. People could barely see their own hands. Trnavarta lifted little Krishna high into the air. Yashoda turned toward the place where she had left Him. She could no longer find her child there. She called His name through the roar of the wind. Her voice could not stop the whirlwind. Fear reached her before she knew what had happened. The neighboring women came to help at once.

The gopis searched the darkened courtyard. They checked the paths and the entrances to homes. Yashoda did not stop looking for her son. Even those beside her could give her no answer. The wind mixed their voices and footsteps. Above them the danger was moving into the sky. Trnavarta thought he could escape easily with the child. But Krishna was no helpless captive in his hands. Below, Vraja waited for the darkness to lift. Each moment felt long to Yashoda.

High in the air Krishna became heavy as a mountain. Trnavarta could rise no farther. The whirlwind lost the force that had carried him upward. The attacker tried to free himself from the child. Krishna held fast to him. Soon the dust began to settle toward the earth. The people beneath the cloud opened their eyes. Suddenly they heard a great impact in the distance. The danger had ended, though they did not yet know how. Everyone ran toward the sound.

Trnavarta lay motionless on a slab of stone. Krishna was safe beside him. The women gathered the child into their arms. They carried Him toward Yashoda with joyful voices. She held Him close after her long fear. For her, her child's return was the greatest wonder. Nanda thought again about Vasudeva's warning. The villagers spoke of the danger that had passed. No one wished to see such a whirlwind again. But all remembered the moment Krishna came back.

Afterward Yashoda watched Him with still greater tenderness. Once, as she nursed and caressed Him, she looked into His mouth. There she saw the sky, sun, moon, and stars. She also saw mountains, rivers, forests, and seas. For a moment familiar closeness seemed without end. She could not immediately explain what she had seen. She closed her eyes in wonder. Krishna was still the little child upon her lap. His face was as familiar to her as ever. She embraced Him again with a mother's love.

In this chapter celebration and fear stand side by side. The broken cart and the whirlwind bewilder the villagers. Yashoda, however, looks first for her child. Her neighbors share her worry when He disappears. They share her joy when they find Him again. The brief glimpse of the universe deepens their wonder. Yet the story remains rooted in their home. Krishna is among the people who call Him by name. That closeness carries them through the stormy day. Gokula continues to care for Him with song and love.
