Krishna, Radha, and the gopis exchange riddles in a moonlit forest, with a flute and vina nearby
Художня ілюстрація історії

Night covered Vrindavan in gentle light. Radha, Krishna, and the gopis were together in the forest. Several games and songs had already delighted them. Vrinda returned the flute to Krishna. Then the company sat at the place of the rasa dance. The forest goddesses cared for them. The friends gathered around Radha and Krishna. Their conversation continued in the cheerful company.

Krishna offered Radha a riddle. He asked what seems alive although made from lifeless matter. It enchants the three worlds with its song. It has a body with openings like gates. The friends listened carefully to His words. Radha thought about the unusual description. She knew the sound that filled the forest. So She answered that it was His flute.

The flute is made of bamboo. Yet in Krishna's hands it seems to come alive. Its openings create the path of the melody. The song reaches the people of Vraja. Radha had recognized the flute in His riddle. Krishna heard Her clever answer. The gopis rejoiced at the reply. Now Radha wished to ask a question too.

Radha asked about another musical instrument. It sings of Krishna with the help of its strings. Its notes reveal its skill. Musical meanings were hidden in the question. Krishna listened carefully to Her words. He recognized the instrument She described. He answered that it was Radha's vina. Its music brings Him joy.

Thus flute and vina met in their conversation. Each instrument was mentioned with tenderness. The gopis enjoyed the exchange of questions. Radha and Krishna showed Their cleverness. Their words held more than one meaning. The friends paid attention to every reply. The riddles connected music and love. The cheerful mood encouraged the others to speak too.

Lalita, Vishakha, and Chitra joined the game. They wished to pose a riddle to Krishna. They asked who is both young and very old. Who is bound and yet gives liberation? Who is associated with darkness and still pure? Their words had been chosen with great wit. The gopis waited to see how He would answer. Krishna considered their double meanings.

He answered that the riddle referred to Him. He explained the different meanings of the words. His dark radiance does not conceal His purity. His lilas reveal both play and freedom. The friends listened to His answer. They had wanted to surprise Him with their wit. But Krishna found a way to reply. The company continued the exchange with smiles.

Vishakha asked another question with hidden meanings. Her words could be understood in more than one way. In His answer Krishna remembered Radha. He praised Her charm and tenderness. Then Chitra offered a riddle of her own. Each friend brought her own cleverness to the exchange. Their game did not demand a quicker answer than another's. Listening carefully was part of the joy.

Radha sometimes frowned at Krishna's jokes. The friends noticed Her mood. Krishna tried to cheer Her again. He offered another riddle built from syllables. Radha replied with a question of Her own. Their minds met through their words. The sakhis enjoyed every new turn. The conversation remained full of play and love.

This retelling follows part of the nineteenth chapter. Krishna's flute is the answer to the first riddle. Krishna recognizes Radha's vina in the next. Lalita, Vishakha, and Chitra ask their own questions. Radha and the gopis take part with mind and heart. Each answer reveals another layer of meaning. The night gathering is full of song and wit. The story celebrates the joy of conversation together.
