Sudama was a brahmana and an old friend of Krishna. In their youth they had studied together with Sandipani Muni. Later their paths through life had separated. Krishna lived in Dvaraka. Sudama and his wife lived very simply. At times they did not have enough food for their home. Yet Sudama was a man with a peaceful heart. He did not measure life's value by wealth. His wife saw the hardship they faced. She remembered Krishna, her husband's friend.

His wife asked Sudama to travel to Dvaraka. She said that his friend might be able to help them. He hesitated to ask for material help. But the thought of seeing Krishna again brought him joy. At last he decided to go. Before the journey, he asked if they had something to give. He did not want to arrive empty-handed at his friend's home. His wife asked their neighbors for a little food. She received four handfuls of flattened rice. She wrapped the rice in a piece of worn cloth.

Sudama took the little bundle. The gift was neither lavish nor costly. But it was all they could gather for the journey. He set out on the road to Dvaraka. The road led him far from his modest home. During the journey he thought of his friend. He wondered how he would see Him again. In the bundle he carried his wife's thoughtfulness. In his heart he carried the memory of their friendship. Thus he reached Krishna's city.

Sudama came to Krishna's home in Dvaraka. His clothes were simple and worn. Seeing him from a distance, Krishna rose from His seat. He hurried to welcome His old companion. He embraced him with great joy. The years since their schooling had not erased their closeness. Krishna offered him a seat beside Him. With His own hands He washed his feet. He welcomed him with respect as a beloved guest. Sudama was moved by such a reception.

Rukmini Devi was beside Krishna. She too showed respect to their guest. She fanned him as he sat. The people of the house wondered at the welcome. Before them stood a man in humble clothes. But Krishna saw His dear friend. He did not ask him about wealth or status. He received him with tenderness and attention. Sudama was given a place beside Him. The value of the meeting lay in their bond.

The two began to remember their school days. They spoke of their time with their teacher. They recalled a day when they gathered firewood. Their teacher's wife had sent them into the forest. There a fierce storm caught them with rain and wind. In the darkness the two stayed together. In the morning their teacher came to find them. He saw the care they had given to their task. The memory brought them back to their youth. Their friendship was alive after so many years.

After their conversation Krishna asked about a gift from home. Sudama felt shy about the little bundle of rice. In the beautiful palace his gift seemed modest to him. But Krishna knew the heart with which it had been brought. He took the bundle His friend was keeping. He opened it and saw the flattened rice. With joy He took a handful and tasted it. His pleasure did not depend on the size of the gift. In the simple offering He saw Sudama's love. His friend felt how precious their reunion was.

Sudama spent the night in Krishna's home. The next morning he prepared to return. He had not asked his friend for wealth. On the road he thought about the warm welcome. He remembered the embrace and the conversation. He marveled at the respect he had been shown. In his thoughts he saw Krishna once more. His heart was filled with gratitude. He did not know what awaited him at home. He continued on the road to his wife.

When he arrived, he scarcely recognized his dwelling. The place of his modest home appeared transformed. His wife came out to greet him. She was delighted to see him again. Sudama understood that Krishna's grace had reached them too. Their hardship had been replaced by prosperity. He remembered that he had spoken no request for wealth. Yet his friend had known their need. Sudama received the change with gratitude. His love for Krishna remained at the center of his life.

This Sudama was the brahmana and Krishna's school friend. He is different from the florist of the same name in Mathura. His small gift had been wrapped in worn cloth. Krishna received it with joy and without contempt. Rukmini honored the guest beside Him. The two friends remembered their days with their teacher. Neither distance nor different lives had broken their bond. Sudama returned home with a grateful heart. His family received care he had not requested in words. The story remains a memory of friendship and love.
