One morning Krishna came to Radha. She asked about His vasa. The Sanskrit word can mean clothing, dwelling, or fragrance. She meant His clothing. Krishna answered as though she had asked where He lived. His dwelling, He said, was in her beautiful eyes.

Radha told Him that she meant His dress. Krishna changed the meaning once again. This time He spoke of fragrance. He connected that fragrance with closeness to her. The same word had opened another path through the conversation. Radha then asked where He had spent the night.

Krishna separated the sounds of her question differently. Instead of spending the night, He heard being stolen by Night. Could bodiless Night carry Him away, He asked? His answer rested upon the play of Sanskrit sounds. In this way He answered her questions with wit. The book says that this playful exchange delighted Radha.
