In Vrindavan Krishna had many dear friends. Among the closest was Subala. He rejoiced to be in His company. He wore a garland around his neck and yellow clothing. His friends valued his intelligence. His words brought happiness to others. He especially loved to serve Krishna. That service sometimes called for discretion. Subala knew when to speak quietly. He also knew when actions said more than words.

The gopis knew of his closeness to Krishna. They knew Subala listened attentively. Sometimes he was entrusted with a message. He did not announce it before the whole gathering. He approached Krishna as a friend. Then he softly spoke the entrusted words to Him. Krishna listened to him with attention. Their exchange needed no great commotion. Subala kept the trust that had been placed in him. Thus he became a bridge between dear friends.

One gopi described this to Radha. She invited Her to look at Subala. He was carrying Radha's message to Krishna. He leaned close to whisper it in His ear. His attentiveness delighted the sakhi. She saw service in one small movement. Radha listened to Her friend's words. The gopis knew the importance of that message. Krishna and Subala remained in confidential conversation. Friendship brought them all closer.

Subala had other messages to convey too. A letter had been prepared by Shyama-dasi. He took it carefully in his hands. He wanted the letter to reach its intended recipient. As he approached, he placed it in Krishna's hand. He did so quietly, without interrupting the gathering. The small sheet carried a friend's words. Its value lay in the love with which it was sent. Krishna received it from Subala's hand. The gopis noticed how carefully he served them.

Palika had prepared another gift for Krishna. She had made betel nuts ready for Him. Subala saw that they reached Him. He offered them to Him with care. Both the giver and the friend shared in that small act. Palika expressed her care through preparation. Subala expressed his by carrying the gift. Krishna was the center of their shared service. The gopis noticed such details. To them no kind help was too small.

Tarakā, meanwhile, had prepared a flower garland. She had joined different blossoms into one gift. The garland was meant to adorn Krishna. Subala received it respectfully. He placed the garland on his dear friend. The fragrant flowers showed Taraka's care. Subala's hands completed her intention. Krishna accepted their joint offering. The friends watched the gift find its place. A quiet joy moved among them.

Each of these acts was different. Once there were words carried in a whisper. Another time a folded letter rested in His hand. Then came the pleasing gift from Palika. And finally the garland prepared by Taraka. Yet the same attentiveness showed through every act. Subala did not try to claim another's gift as his own. He helped others express their love. Each offering bore the mark of the one who prepared it. And his friendship connected them all.

The gopi continued speaking to Radha. She praised Krishna's intimate friends. Their service was more than talk about devotion. It could be seen in everyday acts of care. One person prepared a gift, another carried it. One listened, while another entrusted a message. All were connected through love for Krishna. Radha could see their sincere intention. The companions of Vrindavan had many ways to serve. In each of them there was room for friendship.

Subala remained a close companion of Krishna. Their conversations could be so confidential. Others could not easily understand them. But the trust between them was clear. He served Krishna without seeking praise. He respected the feelings of the gopis too. He treated their messages and gifts with care. In this way each friend could contribute. No role had to be large to mean a great deal. Their shared devotion brought them together.

This is a literary retelling of the forty-first chapter. The book describes Subala as Krishna's close friend. A gopi tells Radha about his service. He whispers Radha's message to Krishna. He quietly places Shyama-dasi's letter in His hand. He also offers Him the gift Palika prepared. He adorns Him with Taraka's garland. The source scene is a brief example of friendly devotion. This retelling develops its details. Its heart is attentive service in friendship.
