A picnic with the cowherd boys

Krishna and His friends share lunch by the Yamuna while their calves graze nearby.

Artistic illustration of the story’s theme

One day Krishna led His friends and the calves to a lovely spot by the Yamuna. They sat in a circle on the grass and opened the food they had brought. The boys shared their lunches, laughed together, and showed Krishna what they had packed at home.

As they ate, the calves wandered off, drawn by fresh grass. Krishna told His friends to continue their meal and went looking for them. When He returned, the boys too had disappeared: Brahma had hidden them to test His power.

Krishna became present as each calf and each boy, so the families of Vraja felt no loss. The story begins with an ordinary meal among friends, then reveals the depth of love connecting Krishna, His companions, and their homes.
