Artistic illustration of the story

Lalita brought a letter from Radha to Krishna. Madhumangala took it to read aloud to Him. It was no ordinary message about a time and place. Radha spoke of an image that had remained within her mind. Krishna heard her words in His friend's voice.

Radha addressed Him as beautiful. She said the loveliness of His picture was impressed upon her. The image no longer stood only before her eyes. It lived in the inner space of her thoughts. So Radha could not simply leave it behind.

When she tried to move away in agitation, the same image appeared in her path again. The more she sought to escape its impression, the more clearly she felt Krishna present in her mind. That is the image formed by her letter.

Madhumangala read the message before Krishna. The friend's voice carried Radha's intimate words. In the drama the verse is written in Prakrit. The brief message joins the picture to memory. Radha tells Krishna how hard it is to turn away from His image.
