The gopis sometimes came to Krishna together. They were eager to behold His beauty. They approached Him in a group during His pastimes. Then, in a playful mood, they walked on.

Krishna brought together the waters of many mountain streams. He made a river flow across their path. It could not easily be crossed on foot. He and His friends then brought a large boat made from many palasha leaves.

Krishna took the role of boatman. The gopis were anxious about the crossing and its fare. He helped them board the boat, finding pretexts to touch them. An affectionate, playful quarrel arose between Him and the gopis.

Krishna took them to the middle of the river and stopped the boat there. He then asked for a fare they could scarcely give. He displayed many playful turns of wit before them. The gopis sang of this pastime of His in verse.
